Typecasting, an Exercise

I think a witch is a word that is inaccurate. The dictionary says a witch is someone who is supposed to practice magic. Well, yeah, I guess so. Except that traditional witches were more often village healers and herb women. Often enough they followed the dominant religion at the time. They seem to have more in common with the modern term “Kitchen witch” than anything else. A magician could practice magic without any gods whatsoever. And a shaman was something else yet again. So while the word “witch” conjures a picture in my mind, it defies a true definition.

“Witchcraft” would be the skills practiced by a witch. Duh. But… again, inaccurate and fuzzy. This is a bad word, “witch”. It can mean far too many things without including anything important. And society dislikes witches. “Politically correct” speaking accepts Wicca but that isn’t necessarily the same thing as witchcraft.

I’m a pagan. To me, all gods are true and all gods are worthy of my respect, if not always my worship. I practice magic but more important to me is the practice of my faith. I practice magic if I need something but the faith is something I try to live, every day, doing everything. Sometimes I succeed better than others.

I want to get back into practicing my faith. I used to practice as a solitary every day but… well, things happened and it’s been about 8 years since I did so regularly again. Recently I found something very important missing from my life. A “faith-shaped” hole in the day. I started going to Church (ALL gods are true, not just the Celtic ones). That helped but it hasn’t been anywhere near enough. Something is still calling me.
